North Carolina state law now requires the N.C. Department of Transportation to begin collecting tolls on all state ferry routes by January 1, 2027, including the currently toll-free Bayview–Aurora route. Specific fares and payment methods have not yet been finalized. NCDOT expects to present recommended toll rates to the N.C. Board of Transportation in October, with the Board scheduled to consider adoption in November. The law also requires a $150 annual commuter pass for active-duty military personnel and permanent residents of North Carolina’s 20 coastal counties, including Beaufort County. Residents, businesses and ferry users may submit comments to NCDOT through September 14, 2026, by visiting the NCDOT Ferry Tolling information page.
