The Town of Aurora receives its water from the Beaufort County Southside Water System. Beaufort County has temporarily changed its water disinfectant from chloramines to free chlorine as part of a state-required routine maintenance program. The change began September 1 and will continue through November 2026.
During this maintenance period, Beaufort County crews will flush fire hydrants throughout the distribution system during both daytime and nighttime hours. Aurora residents may temporarily notice:
• A stronger chlorine odor or taste
• Cloudy or discolored water
• Sediment in the water
• Minor fluctuations in water pressure
According to Beaufort County, these conditions are temporary aesthetic issues, and the water remains safe to drink.
Residents should avoid washing laundry—especially light-colored clothing—whenever discolored water is present because sediment could cause staining.
Important precautions:
• Residents who use tap water for home kidney dialysis should consult their physician to determine whether any changes are necessary to their disinfectant-neutralization procedures.
• Residents with aquariums should monitor both free and combined chlorine levels because free chlorine requires different treatment than chloramines.
